Pantasia
Findlay High School Steelband
Of all the musical instruments in the world there seem to be few that can compare to the unique qualities of the steel drum. Originated in Trinidad, the steel drum is virtually an “infant” among musical instruments, having had its creation and evolution occur only since 1945.
Since it’s inception in the spring of 1997, Pantasia has garnered an impressive reputation as an educational and entertaining instrumental music ensemble. They are always in high demand, averaging over 40 performances a year. Some of their most recent credits include:
-
The Big Easy New Orleans Tour
-
Bill Clinton Campaign at the University of Findlay's
-
Carnival Cruise of the Bahamas
-
Lincoln Center and Central Park in New York City
Awards include:
-
First place high school with a rating of Gold;
-
Tied West Virginia University for overall Grand Champion. (After deliberations, judges awarded grand champion to WVU, however, a very impressive performance by Pantasia!)
Pantasia director, Tim Mattis, is a band director and band department chair. During his tenure with Findlay City Schools he has been awarded the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education, the Teacher Who Made A Difference Award (twice), and has been nominated for Disney's Teacher of the Year Award. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Bluffton College and his Master of Music in Percussion Performance from Bowling Green State University, where he studied with Wendell Jones and Roger Schupp. Mattis has been adjunct instructor of percussion at Ohio Northern University and at Bluffton College. His performance credits include the Lima Symphony Orchestra, the Lima Marimba Ensemble, and a variety of community theater performances, both onstage and in the pit.
